🥒 Pickle fun fact of the week

The Great Pickle Drop of Dillsburg, Pennsylvania

🎉 What It Is

Every New Year’s Eve, the small town of Dillsburg, Pennsylvania (population ~2,500) doesn’t drop a ball — they drop a giant glowing pickle.

It’s the town’s signature event and has been running for over 25 years.

  • The pickle is a giant papier-mâché gherkin, about 9 feet long, nicknamed “Mr. Pickle.”

  • It’s suspended by a crane and lowered slowly as the countdown to midnight begins — just like the Times Square ball.

  • When it reaches the ground, a “pickle kiss” is given (usually a ceremonial smooch between locals), and the crowd erupts in cheers.

🏙️ Why a Pickle?

  • The town is called Dillsburg, named for Matthew Dill, a settler in the 1700s — not dill pickles.

  • But locals leaned into the pun hard, creating pickle mascots, pickle parades, and eventually, the New Year’s Eve Pickle Drop in the late 1990s.

  • It’s now the town’s biggest tourist draw — thousands come out in freezing weather to watch the pickle descend.

🧂 Bonus Traditions

  • The day includes “Picklefest,” with food trucks, live music, and pickle-themed games.

  • Local shops sell pickle-themed merch: “I Got Pickled in Dillsburg” shirts, pickle ornaments, and even pickle-flavored fudge.

  • The pickle is lit up in green lights and dropped twice:

    • Once at 7:00 p.m. for kids.

    • Again at midnight for adults.

**everything is incredible about this and I now wish I was getting Pickled in Dillsburg

And that’s all that for the week!

Short, sweet and simple.

See you crazy pickleheads tomorrow!
